Malaysia - Adding payment type to wallet and specific restrictions

Modified on Sat, 3 Jan at 5:16 PM

Supported Payment Methods in Malaysia:

  • Debit/Credit Cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express

  • Bank Account (via Direct Debit authorization)

How to Add a Card (Desktop/Web):

  1. Log in to your PayPal account at www.paypal.com/my

  2. Click on the Wallet tab at the top of the page

  3. Click Link a card or Link a debit or credit card

  4. Enter your card details:

    • Card number

    • Expiry date

    • Security code (CVV)

    • Billing address (ensure it matches your card statement)

  5. Click Link Card

  6. PayPal may make a small temporary charge (around RM2) to verify the card – this will be refunded

  7. Verify the card by checking your card statement for a 4-digit code from PayPal, then enter it in your PayPal wallet

How to Add a Card (Mobile App):

  1. Open the PayPal app and log in

  2. Tap the Wallet icon (usually at the bottom)

  3. Tap + Add a bank or card

  4. Tap Debit or credit card

  5. Enter your card details manually or use camera capture

  6. Tap Save or Link Card

How to Link a Bank Account (Online Banking):

  1. Go to Wallet in your PayPal account

  2. Click Link a bank account

  3. Select your bank (supported banks include Maybank, CIMB, Public Bank, etc.)

  4. You’ll be redirected to your bank’s login page

  5. Log in with your online banking credentials

  6. Authorize the Direct Debit agreement

  7. Once confirmed, your bank account will be linked

Important Notes for Malaysia:

  • Prepaid cards and e-wallets (like Touch ‘n Go eWallet) cannot be added directly to PayPal

  • PayPal does not support MEPS or FPX as standalone payment methods – these are only available during checkout

  • Malaysian PayPal accounts cannot hold a balance in USD or other currencies without a U.S. account

  • For transactions, PayPal will convert currency at their exchange rate (with a fee) if your card is in MYR

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • If your card is declined, contact your bank to enable international/online transactions

  • Ensure your card is activated for online payments

  • Billing address must match the address registered with your bank

  • Some Malaysian-issued cards may not work for non-MYR transactions – check with your bank
